ALLIANCE OF FAMILIES FOR JUSTICE

The Alliance of Families for Justice seeks to end mass incarceration by supporting, empowering and mobilizing the formerly incarcerated, their families and those in the communities hit the hardest. Based in Harlem, in New York City, this movement is spearheaded by Soffiyah Elijah, a long time advocate and defender of civil and human rights. First, as a criminal defense attorney for 35 years, then as Executive Director of the 150 year old Correctional Association of New York and now as Executive Director of Alliance of Families for Justice, Soffiyah is working to eradicate injustice in American courts, prisons and local jails. AFJ provides referrals of counseling support services, referrals of pro bono attorneys to those whose human rights have been violated, "Welcome Home" events and care packages, an encouragement "buddy" for a year, training in advocacy and assistance in voter registration to those formerly incarcerated and their families.  Along with an seemingly endless list of influential governing/advisory board members and volunteers, AFJ moves forward to help those whose lives have been jeopardized by the criminal justice system. Also on the forefront of this movement is AFJ board member, civil rights activist, humanitarian and actor Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, The Color Purple, Mandela, Witness, Dreamgirls, Escape from Alcatraz). A video message from Danny that we shot for AFJ is lower on the page.

THE MARCH FOR JUSTICE

On August 26 2017, beginning from Harlem in New York City, AFJ supporters began walking 180 miles over 18 days to Albany New York to hold a public rally and press conference on September 13th, the 46th anniversary of the Attica Uprising and Massacre, to bring attention to past and current prison injustices. Over the course of the four day 1971 uprising, a total of 43 correctional officers, civilians and inmates were killed with an additional 89 wounded. The attempted cover-up over the discovery that 10 uprising hostages had been shot to death by police during the final minutes of the uprising as well prisoner abuse allegations during the aftermath, initiated a Congressional investigation of the incident.
